In the passage, the author argues the fact that bees existed on Earth as early as 200 million years ago and bring up three views that doubt existance of bees during that time. However, the professor contends that these theories are not convincing and refutes each of them.
At first, the passage holds the view that no fossil remains of actual bees have ever been found that date to 200 million years ago and the earliest fossil is 100 million years old. The professor, on the other hand, believes that it is true that there is no fossil from 200 million years ago. However, this is due to the fact that the sticky liquid produced by some kind of tree was rare in that time, therefore the fossil could not be preserved. The fact that there is no fossil that date to 200 million years ago, doesn't mean that bees did not exist in that time.
Additionally, the writer mentions that one reason to doubt existance of bees 200 million years ago is absence of flowering plants in that period, since modern bees feed almost excluslively on the flowers of flowering plants. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this theory by pointing out that the bees existed before flowering plants and they fed on none flowering plants like pine trees. Later, with the advent of flowering plants they adopted to fed on them and they are feeding from flowering plants ever since.
Finally, the author suggests that while the fossilized structures found in Arizona are somewhat similar to nest chambers made by modern bees, they lack some of the finer details of bees' nests. On the contrary, the professor states that some chemical evidences on that structures show that they are chemically same as water proof mater created by modern bees.
