The reading claims that doctors in United States should utilize electronic data-based for storing their patients’ medical records and provides three reason of support. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents several points to refute them all.
First, the author argues that electronic data-based provides doctors to reduce the cost of storing. Conversely, the lecturer casts doubt on this idea by stating that doctors should keep the paper forms of their data because of legal issues and having a back for their electronic data. So, it does not reduce the costs which doctors should pay.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that electronic data-bases assist doctors to reduce their error and their mistakes. In contrast, the lecturer underlines the fact that it does not reduce the amount of errors because doctors still use pens and papers for their works and their staffs convert these paper-based records to the electronic records. As a result, this work could not eliminates the amounts of errors due to the illegible handwriting.
Finally, the reading states that these electronic records help scientists to conduct their researches. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that performing researches is still difficult for doctors how use these electronic records, mainly because of medical privacy laws. She states that these strict laws do not allow researchers to utilize these information, unless they have a permission for patients and they always do not allow doctors to use their medical information. So, it is fallacious conclusion to say that electronic data-bases pave scientists’ way to do their works.
