Both the reading and listening parts offers two opposite outlooks about the effectiveness of methods for refuging and endanger frog population. while the passage lists the possible causes of population decrement and their solutions; the professor, on the other hand, cast doubts on the accuracy of either the problems or the provided solutions.
First of all, the text mentioned to the usage of pesticides by farmers which contaminate frog’s habitat and has fatal effect on them, it also said that by the prevention of their usage in the farmland close to the frogs' habitat, they would be safe. On the contrary, the instructor challenges this proposal as it is not practical and fair. As she explains, the use of pesticide is for decrement of crop loss by the pests and insects, and it leads to the increment of yield in a competitive marketing system. By this solution, the farmers, whose farms are next to frogs living spots, will severely be affected and missed lots of crop and yield in the market. Thus, this proposal is not possible and beneficial for the farmers.
Secondly, in the article, another adduced reason for population decrement is listed as fungus which thickens and infected frogs' skin and leads to their death by dehydration. The text also refers to the antifungal medicine to treat sensitive frogs as a feasible solution for this problem. On the other hand, the lecturer rejects the efficiency of this treatment too. As she asserts, the treatment should be done on individually, which means each frog should be captured and medicine applied separately, by the consideration of the huge population of frogs, this action seems arduous. Furthermore, the treatment does not impact the offspring; consequently, the treatment should be repeated in each generation for the prevention of infection. So, this solution is not practical for controlling the decreasing population.
Finally, meanwhile, the passage highlighted the distraction of the natural water habitats as the main reason of population decrement; and purposed monitoring the human's activities and protection of wetlands to recover the frog’s species; the professor, on the contrast, refutes this cause. As she describes, mankind's activities are not the main threaten of wetland disappearance; global warming is the main factor of this event. Even with controlling the people's activities, the water loses by global warming would not be hampered. So, this solution does not address the problem since does not deal with the main cause.
