How animaulas are able to migarate long distances is still uknown for scientists. The author believes a specific kind of animal, humback whales, migrate by the help of the stars in the sky and asserts three reasons. However, the Lecturer cast doubts all reasons.
First, in contrast to the author idea that cognitive skills to use star for navigating and intelligence have correlation to each other, the lecturer thinks differently. The lecturer says there is no connection between them and ellaborate this by explaining an example. Ducks are considered as animual who have average cognitive ability, while they are not intelligent. Those cognitive skills are somehow instinct. So the idea of using stars just because of being intteligent do not make sense.
Secondly, the lecturer rejects what is says in reading about the need of sending external object or forces for orienting in a sraight direction. Also he asserts humback whales have some sort of biomagnetic ability in their brain help them sense the Earth’s magnetic, and lead them ot find their directions to migrate in a staight way.
Finally, sharks are a exceptional example of animals who do spy-hopping but do not migerate. Sharks just do spy-hopping to look for their prey. Therefore, the professor claims the use of spy-hopping as a reason for navigating is a pure speculation.
