TPO52IntegratedTask-Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons. Low Gravity To begin with, asteroids are often much smaller than planets, so they have lower gravity. When landing a spaceship, the craft would not be pulled as strongly or as forcefully toward the asteroid's surface, making the landing safer than landing on the Moon or Mars; it would also allow a spacecraft to carry much more equipment needed to set up the colony. It would also be easier for the spacecraft to take off again, so the spaceship would need to carry considerably less fuel for the trip back to Earth. Mining Valuable Metals Next some asteroids are rich in valuable elements and precious metals that are relatively rare on Earth, such as gold and platinum. An asteroid colony would be extremely profitable and a good source of these raw materials. The colonists or businesses sponsoring them could more than pay for the cost of their support by mining minerals and sending them back to Earth. Easy to Reach Finally, asteroids are a good option for colonization because some of them would be very easy to reach. There are a number of asteroids that periodically come within or near Earth's orbit Some of them actually get closer to Earth than our Moon. So these asteroids would be much easier and more affordable to get to and get back from than a planet like Mars, which would require a two-year trip in each direction.
The reading passage and the lecture both discuss the workability of living in other planets. In the reading part, the author mentions that there are several benefits of landing on other planets. In the listening part, however, the apeaker challenges what the author states and rebuts the reasons, citing that the ideas are not practical.
To begin with, as mentioned in the article, the author sets forth that the asteroids have low gravity; therefore, it is easy to bringe people or equipments on there. Nevertheless, the speaker flatly contradicts the idea and contends that landing on those planets has lots of risks for human's health. Moreover, when scientists live just a few months in a spacecraft, their mustels and their bons coming too weak.
Secondly, the author poins out that individuals can extract raw materials such as metal and gold, which has profits for the government to invest in this process. Nonetheless, the author refutes the reasons asserting that it seems a profitable idea; howevere, when the government releases lots of metal form those planets, the price would reduced, and it does not make any benefits for their owners. In addition, the cost of transpotrting the metals are high, and it decreases the incomes, and it is not affordable any more.
Finally, the author claims that for reaching on them, people need just a short time because they come close to the earth even closer that moon. In contrast, the professor is of the opinion that they distances are varied between year and other year. it might be easy to go there, but earth is not readily accessiblle when they want to come back. As a matter of fact, orbiting around the sun become different in this time. therefore, the time to come back earth is not getting shorter.
