Recently, there has been a ton of debate about encouraging all wood companies to get certification to attract customers by advertising their product as ecocertified. More specifically, in regard to the passage, the writer puts forth the idea that the wood companies in the United States will not do this to receive ecocertification for three reasons. On the other hand, in the listening section, the professor is quick to point out there are some serious flaws in the writer’s claims. In fact, the professor believes that the author’s theories are not convincing, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states that American consumers would not believe and trust advertising claims because they are exposed to so much advertising. Some professionals in the same field, however, stand in firm opposition to this claim. In the lecture, for example, the instructor refutes that American consumers do not treat all advertising as the same. In addition, he goes on to say that they can distinguish between the noteworthy advertisement and non-advertisement one. Consequently, the professor shows the weakness of the writer’s first point.
One group of scholars, represented by the author, think that ecoscertified wood will be expensive. Therefore, American wood companies will prefer to keep the cost low because American consumers look for cheaper prices. Of course, though, not all experts in this field believe this is accurate. Again, the speaker specifically addresses this point when he explains that all people care about the cost especially if the difference in the price is big. Furthermore, if the difference in the price is small, there are other factors should the consumers search about it. In this way, the professor shows the limitation of the writer’s third theory because the American consumers value, protect, and conserve the products.
Finally, the writer wraps his argument by positing that American companies could not keep up with developments in the rest of the world because they market their products in the United States rather than abroad. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that even though they did not sell products out of the United States, the foreign products will enter this country. As a result, the professor displays the inaccuracy of the writer’s third reason because the competition will start between the international products and domestic products.
