trip to Mars
The main topic of the lecture and the article is whether or not we can send humans to Mars. The writer is skeptical and provides some problems with this plan, but the speaker provides solutions to each problem presented by the writer.
To begin with, the author thinks that, unlike the trip to the moon which was only a few days, the trip to Mars can last up to two years, and this would cause a problem because humans need water, food, and oxygen. The lecturer casts doubt on this claim. She states that they can bring hydro-panics with them. hydro-panics are some plants that grow with their roots in the water. This way, astronauts can cultivate their food, and use the oxygen that the plant makes for breathing. Moreover, these plants recycle water, so the water problem could be fixed as well.
Secondly, the author posits that spending that much time in space could greatly harm a human, as it would reduce one's muscle mass and bone density. The professor challenges the validity of this point by saying that, even now many astronauts spent months in zero gravity. They do regular exercise to keep their muscles, and they also take supplements such as calcium to protect their bone density.
Lastly, the author contends that sum produces harmful radiation. Because of the earth's gravity, they are eliminated on earth, but in the trip to Mars, they can be extremely harmful to humans. Furthermore, a shield to protect the spaceship is too heavy, so it can not be a solution. The lecturer, however, asserts that sun radiations are temporary. The spaceship can contain a little shield only for the time the radiations are activated, for the humans to shelter there. This way it can be less heavy and practical for the plan.
