It is argued that storing patients' medical records in electronic databases has several advantages over traditional paper-based record keeping.

Reducing Costs
First, the use of electronic records can help reduce costs by saving money on storing and transferring medical records. While paper records require a significant amount of storage space, electronic medical records take up virtually no space. Moreover, by having patients' records computerized in databases, doctors can easily access the records from almost anywhere and can easily duplicate and transfer them when necessary. This costs much less than copying, faxing, or transporting paper records from one location to another.

Preventing Errors
Second, electronic medical records are crucial to reducing the chances of medical errors. Illegible handwriting, improper transcription of data, and nonstandard organization of paper records have caused errors that in some cases have had serious consequences for the patients' health. In contrast, electronic records are associated with standardization of forms and legible computer fonts and thus minimize the possibility of human error.

Aiding Research
Third, electronic medical records can greatly aid medical research by making it possible to gather large amounts of data from patient records. It is often impractical, impossible, or prohibitively expensive to manually go through thousands of patients’ paper records housed in doctors' offices. However, with the existence of electronic medical records, it would be simple to draw out the needed information from the medical databases because the databases are already formatted for data collection. Once in the electronic system, the records could be accessed from any research location.

The reading and the lecture both are about the ways of medical information can be stored. The author feels that storing medical records of the patient's in E- forms are advantageous over the paper records. The lecturer challenges all the claims made by the author and indicates them hereunder.

First of all, the lecturer says that by saving information as electronic is not going to save money, because the doctors keep doing the paperwork in case of emergency and also for back up information. For instance, in case of an emergency, the doctor has to note down the history of the patient and sign the paperwork in order to start any treatment. Moreover, for this type, they have no choice to hamper the process of paper records. Additionally, they still have to pay for the storage in order to maintain the paper records in case of emergencies. This particular point contrasts with the reading. The reading states that by maintaining electronic records money can be saved when compared to the paper records.

Secondly, the professor mentions that most of the doctors, even after adapting to the electronic records they still make some paperwork because after noting points on a paper they will enter the information into the computer whenever they get time. Furthermore, the clinic staff also use the paperwork for any emergencies, and the possibility of making mistakes cannot be avoided. For example, when the office staff does not understand the writings of a doctor when entering the system will create enormous errors in the computer. On the other hand, the reading argues that errors can be avoided by adapting to an electronic form of storage.

Finally, the article posits that research can be done very easily if all the records are available in the electronic system because they can extract the information available on a computer despite any location. The tutor counteracts this point and provides that restrictions are high for the medical records to obtain them. In the U.S the laws and strict privacy rules of patients make it difficult to grab them. Moreover, as there are strict rules and complicated procedure to get the information we want, we need to take special permissions from the higher authorities and also from the patients. This point can be illustrated as the patients can also block their own details and medical records for privacy and can render whenever they need.
