The passage and lecture discuss about the potential benefits and harms of profesors appearing on the television shows. The reading states that the appearance on TV is highly beneficial to students, professors, university and also to the public. The passage gives 3 reasonings for the above claim. However , the professor in the lecture refutes all the 3 reasoning and says all are unwarranted reasonings.
Firstly, the reading posits that the professors reputation/importance will be enhanced as their TV appearance and professors idea can reach wider number of audience. The lecture contradicts by saying that its not the case, in fact the professor will be attributed as not a serious scholar among peers as they often think these professors are wasting time on TV rather than on serious research.
Secondly, the reading claims that universities will get great publicity which will lead to increased donations and more applications to said university. The professors denies this as well by saying that since the professors are not actually participating in real reasearch as they will be wasting more time on travel, makeup, pre-presentation preparation for TVs ; which will lead to professors getting lesser donations for their research. Also the professors may not may not have enough time to help and discuss with existing students. Side effects can be reduced number of applications.
Finally, the passage boldly presents that public will learn great deal of learning and get real insights from the expertise of professors . The lecture contrasts this view as well. The lecture states that the TV talks dont look for deep views rather they will present the superficial knowledge and only bold incendiary titles which can benefit the channels and thier movies. Hence , lecture indirectly states that the professor's talk on the TV show may not be benefical after all.
