Whether hydrogen fuel-cell engines are better substitute for internal-combustion engines or not?
The reading specifies that there are three main reasons to support the idea that fuel cell engine are more advantageous compared to internal combustion engines, however, the lecturer casts doubt on this claim and brings up three reasons to reject the specific points made in the reading passage.
First of all, the author asserts that internal combustion engine relies on petroleum and gasoline which have finite sources whereas hydrogen sources are not limited. Nevertheless, the lecturer states that the hydrogen for fuel-cell is not accessible easily. Pure liquid should be obtained by some complex processes. Achievement to technology of manufacturing and storing the fuel is really sophisticated.
Second, based on the reading, hydrogen based engines are attractive since it can solve pollution problems derived from internal combustion engines. On the contrary, the lecturer contradicts the idea that fuel-cell cannot solve pollution problem. In fact, they need some purification process before usage. This process require energy which obtain from combustion of oil and gasoline. Hence, they in turn produce pollution as well.
Third, the reading proposes that fuel-cell will be economically competitive soon. People spend less money for them compared to previous methods. In contrast, the lecturer dismisses the idea due to manufacturing process of fuel-cell is too expensive. Some scarce metal is used in fuel cell engines. Also, providing electrical power by hydrogen is not possible.
Therefore, the points mentioned in the reading do not make sense.
