which is better, group or personal problem solving?
The reading passage and the lecture are both about group problem solving technique. The passage hold the view that this technique is better than personal problem solving. The speaker challenges this point. He believes that solving problems in groups of people has a lot of disadvantages.
First of all, the author contends that teams tend to do better in problem solving because of the greater resources. There are multiple knowledge sources, more expertise elements, and a lot of skills in comparison with one person solving a problem. The lecturer casts doubt on this claim. He thinks that only a few number of team members do all the work, while others don’t contribute at all. The problem is that team gets positive or negative feedbacks as a whole not for individual members themselves.
Secondly, the author thinks that a team working environment is more rewarding. It is mentioned in the passage that members are more willing to work on ideas developed by them rather than working on someone else idea. The lecturer refutes this argument. He points out that some ideas developed by teams are prone to other factors. For instance, influential members of the team might persuade the team of their creative ideas which most of the team agrees to, given the warning of some of the members of the negative impact of these ideas.
