Wind is a clean, renewable source of energy which holds much promise, and so private companies and governments have been actively exploring ways to commercially exploit wind power.
The passage talks about the disadvantages of wind generators. Disputing the passage’s arguments, the professor cites several pieces of evidence showing that these power utilities are not as problematic as the passage has argued.
First, she claims the location of the wind farms can complement the large amount of land required by them as the passage has argued. Since wind generators are often located off-shore or on high mountains, the structures will not take much space used by human. Hence, although they will occupy plenty of space, these structures will not greatly affect people’s lives.
Second, the professor takes exception to the passage’s claim that wind generators wreak havoc on birds and bats. She maintains that any buildings, including skyscrapers and two-story houses, will bring damage to animals. Moreover, the California wind form cited in the passage is an old type of machine. This machine has turbines that move quickly and is often located near flying or nesting regions of birds, thereby causing great harm to bird populations. However, new types of wind generator have turbines that move slowly, which will make the birds easy to fly pass without getting hurt.
Third, dismissing the passage’s claim that there is aesthetic issue regarding the wind generators, the professor thinks that the location of the power plants will make it nearly invisible to people’s eyes. Once again, she maintains that the wind farms will be built on the mountains or off the shore. Therefore, it is highly probable that people will not have the chance to catch sight of them. Thus, wind farms are not likely to damage the beauty of landscape.
