The yellow crazy ant is one of the world's most destructive invasive species (species that are not native to an area but rather introduced to it).It has spread to many regions of Earth and caused great damage to native ecosystems. In recent decades, the crazy ant has invaded part of a unique palm forest on one of the Seychelles Islands off the coast of Africa. Some strategies are being considered to stop the ant from spreading farther and damaging the unique ecosystem of the palm forest.
Yellow crazy ant are causing great harm to the local ecosystem. There are several strategies that are being addressed in the passage, yet they have been challenged by the lecturer. Using traps, cutting certain trees for destructing habitats and limiting human activities have been proposed by the passage but were challenged by the lecturer.
First of all, using traps containing toxic chemicals proves to be menacing to native ants.
According to the lecturer, since in the island near Australlia there were no native ants using this method proves useful. While applying this method in areas such as Seychelles Island can be extremely harmful to the native ants. Thus, this method can have more disadvantages than it has advantages.
Secondly, cutting broad-leaved trees that provide a suitable habitat for yellow ants will not solve the problem. Although, it might limit one habitat for the ants it provides a broader area for them to thrive. According to the lecturer, ants use open areas with broad sunlight as well. Thus, cutting broad-leaved trees can provide habitats with sunlight where ants will still be able to thrive.
Thirdly, the passage suggested limiting human activities in the area since it is believed that human activities such as transportation of construction materials or bringing food to the area has resulted in nourishment of yellow ants. The lecturer, on the other hand, suggests that tourism is the main income source of people in these areas and limiting tourism will harm people from an economic standpoint.
All in all, although the strategies proposed by the passage may at first prove to be useful; they create some problems as well. These methods can harm native ants, provide a better habitat to the harmful ants and hurt local economy.
