Invasive plants are a growing problem. In the United States, there are over one thousand species of nonnative plants that have been identified as a threat to native plants and animals. One way nonnative plants are introduced into an area is through gardening. In the past, gardeners cultivated nonnative species for food or medicine. Gardeners still bring in plants from other parts of the world, sometimes because they ant hardy or drought-resistant plants, in other cases because of the particular beauty of some species. If the conditions are right in their new environment these nonnative plants can escape the garden and grow wild. Many of them are very aggressive. Then we call them invasive. They take over an area, pushing out the native species. They may shade out the local plants, strangle them with vines, or deplete the soil of nutrients. The effects on the local ecology can be devastating. Native plants are reduced in number, and animals suffer loss of habitat and reduction of food supplies.
In the set of materials, the article talks about the growth of invasive plants and discusses how they are growing in the United States, also what problems they cause. In the same way, the professor provides an example of garlic muster to illustrate this.
First, the reading states that the invasive plants first are introduced into an area through gardening. Gardeners cultivated nonnative species for food or medicine. Some people cultivated them for particular beauty of some species. The professor explains that garlic muster, as a certain type of invasive plants, is a cool season plant that grows in moist shady areas. These plants are called invasive because they aggressively compete with other plants for light, nutrients and space. In addition, the professor says that these plants threat the animals because the invasive plants, as explained, destroy their food sources. The professor provides an example of a special kind of butterfly to explain this. For the depletion of the butterflies’ source food, these butterflies are in great danger. Further, the professor states that some of the invasive plants produce toxic chemicals by the effects of which the butterfly eggs may not hatch.
Second, the reading states that there are over one thousand species of nonnative plants in the United States. Similarly, the professor says that the number of invasive plants is growing in the United States. First, they appeared in the northern areas in the united state, but now they made their way in the Midwest and Mideast areas. According to statistics, one may conclude that the native plants and animals are in great peril and necessary actions must be instigated by the government to prevent these problems.
