TPO 6, Task 1
The professor discusses the advantages of communal online encyclopedias and refutes each of the author's points by providing supporting details and explanations. The information she presents contradicts the facts outlined in the reading passage.
First, she states that an encyclopedia without any error is impossible to find. We can never make sure that an encyclopedia is 100% free of error, no matter it is online or not. Moreover, in online encyclopedias, correcting mistakes is easier in comparison to traditional printed ones. Hence, the errors in printed versions may remain intact for decades. Although, the reading passage says online encyclopedias often lack credentials.
Second, the professor asserts that online encyclopedias are safe, due to strong protection strategies, which are implemented nowadays. For example, the articles online could be submitted on a read-only format, so that no one can change or edit them. What's more, skilled editors and experts in related areas could be hired to check and review the information or data and make changes whenever necessary. On the other hand, the article casts doubt on the safety of online encyclopedias, by speaking about the possibilities of hacking and fabrication of information.
Third, the professor is against the point that communal online encyclopedias have a narrow focus. In contrast, it is their core advantage. As everyone knows, a great variety of journals, e-books, and other sources of information are available online, which offer a vast diversity of viewpoints and topics to interested readers. However, because of their limited space, traditional printed encyclopedias present limited information covering a small portion of the topic. On the contrary, the reading passage posits that online encyclopedias create a false impression of what is important or popular and what is not.
