In this set of materials, both the reading passage and the lecture discussed the trustworthy of the claim made by Robert.E Peary that he has reached the North Pole in 1909. The reading passage firmly stated some testimonies in favoru of Robert's claim. However, the lecture repudiated what stated in the reading resting upon fallacious premises and provides three counterclaims proofing that none of the given evidences in the reading are convincing.
Firstly, the reading claimed that as one of the National Geographic Society committee has been approved, all the Peary's claims were exact and consistent. The professor contradicted this point by acknowledging that although the committee declare Robert had reached the North Pole, as the committee was made by one of the close friends of Robert who get a large fund for conducting a thorough investigation, they are hardly acceptable to be truth.
Secondly, the reading argued that a recent expedition supports Robert's claims of that fast travel. Notwithstanding, the lecture highlighted that in the aforementioned expedition made by a British explorer named Avery, foods were transported by airplane also it took place in not a harsh weather conditions. Therefore, it not true to compare the trips of Robert and Avary.
Lastly, the article contended that by measuring the shadows in photographs taken by Robert scientist could calculate the position of the sun and understand the exact place where they once had been taken. This seemed to be incorrect as explained in the lecture. The speaker articulated that, as the calculations of this technique have to be very precise and exact; scientists could not do them by observing some photos, which have been faded over the time.
