TPO30 The burining mirror
In this set of materials, the reading passage and the lecture are both discussing the topic of burning mirror. However, the lecturer disagrees with the idea in the reading passage. He thinks the theorems mentioned in the article are not correct, offering several reasons to oppose the article.
The first reason is that the mirror doesn't have to be wide. While the article indicates that the Greeks were not technologically advanced enough to make the device due to the size of the copper. The lecturer points that the Greeks didn't use only single mirror, they used several pieces of polish copper which can cause the Roman ships on fire.
Second, the lecturer refutes the article by mentioning the substance used to build Roman ships. Although the article claims that the it took long time to set object by using the burning mirror in the experiment, the lecturer says that the experiment is not right because the Roman ships were not only made by wood but also a sticky substance called pitch. The pitch can be set on fire in seconds and burn the wood on the ship.
Third, the article states that the Greeks had no reasons to use the burning mirror because they already have a similar weapon which is flaming arrows. However, the lecturer argues that the burning mirrors are more effective and surprising to the enemies because the enemies cannot see the burning race on mirrors.
