TPO 17 Q1
It’s a known fact that human populations are growing rapidly, according to the text, this will affect the birds’ habitats in the United States and will result that number of birds will decline. On the other hand, the professor finds that the argument presented by the text to support its claim is not accurate and contain misleading facts.
First, the professor partially agree that as human settlements expands it will destroy more bird's natural habitats, but she added that the settlements itself provides better and large habitats for the birds. She gave an example of pigeon being around the urban city and the Hulk, foker two kinds of birds that prey on pigeon, also used the new habitats. The professor concludes that some bird’s species will shrink while other will continue to thrive. However, the text only highlights the dark side of the vanishing habitat.
Second, the professor agrees that because human populations are growing too fast agricultural activities must meet the needs, but at the same time she stated that in the United States less and less lands are used for agriculture purpose because of advanced technology used to produce variety of food, and more food per unite of lands. However, the text states that as more food are required more wildness area will disappear.
Finally, the professor also agrees that as the need to pesticides are increasing they will cause more harm to the wild life. But she added that people are becoming more and more aware of the negative effects of pesticide and based on that two major changes are happening; first new, improved less toxic pesticide are produced. Second, genetic modification to plant to repel pest, don’t need to be treated with pesticide and more importantly do not harm the birds are being produce. On the other hand, the text asserts that pesticide are poisons harming the birds in so many ways starting with interfering with their food chain and ending by preventing the birds from reproducing.
