The reading and the lecture discuss the coin that has been discovered at American archeological site. The passage claims that the coin does not belong to Norse. However, the speaker brings up three reasons to rebut all dubious ideas presented in the passage and states that undeniable evidence proves that the coin has belonged to European.
First of all, the writer holds the view that the coin discovering location is far from the Norse settlements in America. In contrast, the lecturer refutes this idea and underlines the fact that Norse traveled a great distance. In other words, they could have reached that place in one of their long trip. In addition, many other objects have been found at that location that proves this theory.
Second of all, the author contends that archeologists have not found any other coins. The passage has used this to conclude that the Norse did not bring any silver coin to North America. However, the professor contradicts this contention and asserts that Norse brought the silver coin to America. As a matter of fact, the Norse did not create permanent settlements, so they would pack all of their staff back to Europe. Therefore, they took back their coins back with themselves which cause the American archaeologists have not discovered silver coins in America,
Finally, the writer states that silver coin was not acceptable as money by American. On the contrary, the speaker rebuts this statements and stresses that Norse used silver coins for trading. Indeed, American accepted any objects that looked beautiful or interesting for them. The silver coin could be used in accessories and necklaces which made silver coins interesting for American. Norse took advantage of this property of silver and use this in their purchasing.
