TPO 35- Task 1
The reading asserts that the Voynich manuscript which is written in an entirely unknown script, is hard to be decoded and no one can understand the book's content so far. The passage provides three theories to explain the origin of the manuscript. The professor, meanwhile, casts serious doubts on this claim and believes that none of the three arguments are convincing enough to declare that who the author of this manuscript is.
First, the reading passage states that the manuscript is a genuine work on some scientific or magical subject written in a complicated secret code. The passage adds that Anthony Ascham could be the author because many plant illustrations in the Voynich manuscript are quite similar to Ascham's book. In contrast, the professor claims that Anthony Ascham was an ordinary scientist in the field of physics with simple ideas. Thus, based on his knowledge and standpoints, it is improbable for him to be the author of such intricately written book.
Second, the lecturer makes the point that it is unlikely for this book to be written to sell to the rich people because these codes are real and complex. He comments that sixteenth-century people were full enough and it was easy to deceive them by simple books. Therefore, there were no need to write such a complexly coded book. However, the reading declares that the manuscript is a fake one and its text has no real meaning. In fact, it was composed by Edward Kelly, who was famous for extracting money from nobles by pretending to have magical powers and write some fake magic books to sell them.
Finally, although the reading passage posits that the manuscript is a new fake written by Wilfrid M. Voynich, who planned to sell the fake as a mysterious old book for attractive offers, the professor disagrees and thinks that according to the recent analysis of the manuscript, this theory is problematic. He believes that the evaluated ink and vellum showed that these appliances dated back to four thousand years ago. In this regard, since it is impossible that the Voynich found a four thousand years old ink to make the manuscript, it was not composed by him.
