Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been made only by the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could have crossed it only by boat, and no Palean boats have been found. Thus it follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean.
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
Argument states that Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean. Premise given for argument is that archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. Author did not consider some of the crucial assumptions. Since ignorance of these assumption makes argument ineffective as well as unsound.
First assumption argument assumes that there was no trading between village of Palea and village across the Brim River. Author did not give exegesis for this assumption. Author excluded possibility of trading. There may be possibility that village of Palea was producing woven baskets and because of its peculiar and distinctive patten, people of village across the Brim River liked it a lot and started purchasing it from village of Palea which clearly explain that archaeologists discovery about baskets they encountered in village across the Brim River. But author did not elucidate and clarify this assumption.
Second assumption argument presents that ancient Paleans could have crossed river only by boat. He neglect possibility of swimming because river is deep and broad. But professional swimmers can easily accomplish these task and one good reason supporting this assumption is that because village is rural area so people and their generations mingled into outdoor activities like swimming, hunting, catching fish and cooking meal by fire because they do not have facilities like urban area. Catching fish is survivor for them so they are perfect in swimming because it puts food on table for families otherwise they will starved to death. So by indulging into physical activities their stamina will be five or six times than people living in urban area but author found it absurd that who can swim in broad and deep river and neglect it but he did not know about village people and about their activities and how much they are capable of accomplish those tasks which are bizarre to urban people.
Third assumption argument omits that inconsistencies of no Palean boats have been found. If humans were perfect then how bring sudden revolution can come into our lives. We trust robots and machines because of their least probability of giving wrong results. if no Palean boats have been found then it might be possible that author did not search thoroughly whole village because it is tedious task and by examining some of places he declared that because no Palean boats have been found but reality is different which author ignored.
Ultimately, argument is totally unsound and ineffective. Because author did not consider assumptions that are listed above. Evidence presented for argument that Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean does little support for argument. Finally argument can be strengthened by claiming that there were no trading involvement between both villages and search for boat gave right information and only possible way to cross river is by boat.
