In the set of material, the reading passage discusses about mead theory and the listening passage cast doubt about this theory. She studied about the effect of culture on gender role.
Mead studies three societies that have different behavior. In the first society, behavior of men and women are remarkably similar. Men and women in this society exhibited feminine characteristics such as sensitive to each other and express emotion.
In the second society, men and women considered male characteristics, both of them harsh and aggressive.
Last society, mead found that in this society men have feminine characteristics opposite of women that have male characteristics. Women in this society are aggressive. Mead concluded that gender characteristics come more from society than from biology.
In the listening passage cast doubt on meads theory by listing two different criticisms of her research. The first one was that her results were too neat in that she researched three cultures and results were fit to these three society categories. The second criticism was that she looking for societies that exhibited certain behavior and more attention to fit in with theory that she want to prove.
