More and more qualified people are moving from poor to rich countries to fill vacancies in specialist areas like engineering, computing and medicine.
Some people believe that by encouraging the movement of such people, rich countries are stealing from poor countries. Others feel that this is only part of the natural movement of workers around the world.
Do you agree or disagree?
Technology evolution is providing new instruments and devices to change not only our leisure time, but also our way to relate with work. The possibility to work at home is perhaps the biggest advantage that our society has because of this shift, in my opinion.
First of all, workers can save much time avoiding to move everyday from home to workplace, and then back at home at the end of the day. Moreover, employees can work in a place that suits their expectations, being as consequence more relaxed and enhancing their productivity.
Secondly, employers have the occasion to save money and solve some organization problems, typically dealing with the need to hire offices to have a place where their employees can work. Furthermore, by working at home the workers use their own computer and electronic devices, so they can save money also from this point of view.
Thirdly, a decrease of everyday movements by car or public transport means an improvement of environmental quality, with less pollution both concerning air emissions and noise. About this, we should in fact consider how nowadays most of the pollution is generated by people movements, dealing in particular with daily travels from home to workplace.
All these things considered, I strongly believe that the chance offered by work-at-home is so positive that our society should adopt it as the best way possible to re-think itself in a sustainable way. There is no evident reasons, in my book, that could prevent our society from such an important and revolutionary change.
