This figure illustrates the average marriage age of men and woman in England and Wales, during fourty years period, from 1960 to 2000. To simplify, it is presented in decades. The above line represents the men age, while the below one represents the woman’s.
In general, it can be seen from the graph that the youngest average marriage age for men and women within these four decades occured in 1961 and reached its top in 2000.
The graph shows that both men and women in 1971 tended to marry at younger age than those who married in the preceeding decade. Following that year onwards, the average marriage age of men kept rising steadily for three decades until 2000. After a slight incline during 1971 to 1981, the average marriage age of woman began to rise sharply towards 2000, but it suddenly had a little slowdown in 1991.
Interestingly, there were some similarities of average marriage age difference between men and woman. The first similarity occured in 1961, 1981, and 2000. While the second one occured in 1971 and 1991.
Overall, it can be concluded that within these four decades period, from 1960 to 2000, regardless of a single decline occured in 1971, there was a tendency to marry at the older age for men and woman in England and Wales.
