Given is a graph revealing some striking similarities in the fertility of China and the USA during a period from 1920 to 2000. It is evident that both rates fluctuated over the timescale, with lows during the 1940s and highs during the 1950.
Increasing from approximately 10 percent in 1920, Chinese birth rate rose dramatically to 15 percent in 1930. After that, it plunged to a low of 5 percent in 1940 and remained unchanged in the next five years. However, the fertility of China reached its peak of 20 percent in 1950, then it was followed by a sharp fall. The latter half of century brough a sustained decline in the figure.
The USA's birth rate fluctuated from 1920 to 1950 before experiencing an abrupt decrease to less than 5 percent in 1945. This was followed byan exponential growth to the peak of 15 percent in 1950. The next fifty years saw a steady decline in the rate.
In conclusion, the fertility of two countries appears comparable until 1950, its gap widened as the fertility of China slid away.
