Nowadays schoolchildren and students are taught to be competitive towards their classmates and aren’t encouraged to help the weaker students. Do the disadvantages of this outweigh the advantages?
It is true that there is increasing competition among children at school and weaker children seem to receive little support from their counterparts. Although this trend has some benefits, I would accept that its negative impacts are more considerable.
On the one hand, there are some advantages of stimulating the competition between children at school. The first benefit is that children would put all effort and time into the study with a purpose of catching up with their peers. For example, instead of spending time watching games or going out, they will sit at the table and try to complete all tasks that their teachers give. As a result, parents and teachers could witness a rapid progress of these learners, which completely satisfy their expectation. Besides enhancing the efforts in study, competition also aims to practice children’s self-confidence. They are less likely rely on the support of surrounding people and would find the way to overcome the challengings they have.
However, I believe that the drawbacks of this tendency are more significant. Firstly, encouraging people to compete with others from the early stages can cause tremendous effects to children. Children are prone to be easily envious when their counterparts obtain better results and lack of co-operation with others. Additionally, the competition in the academic environment also results in the strong emphasis on study, which interferes children with extra-curriculum activities. As a consequence, children are ill-equipped knowledge about society and building relationships, which plays an integral part in their career path later.
In conclusion, this trend can help young students in various aspects, however, I still believe that its negatives outweigh the positive effect
