According to both reading and listening, a massive extinction happened at the end of the Triassic period. The author discusses three theories to explain the cause of extinction, the professor, on the other hand, refutes all of them.

First of all, the reading part mentioned declining in sea level as a cause of this phenomenon because of fluctuating sea levels near the end of the Triassic. However, from her point of view, the fluctuation of sea level is a good explanation for extinction if it happens suddenly not gradually. Because it is proved if the sea level changing is gradually, the ecosystem can adapt itself. The fluctuation in that time occured in several million years not suddenly.

Secondly, the passage claims climate cooling because of increasing in quantity of SO2, since the volcanic interruption as a good theory. The professor, however, disagrees with the theory. She says it needs a long time stability in large amount of SO2 to cause the high decreasing in temperature to be good reason for extinction. While SO2 could not sustain in atmosphere. It solves in water and comes down by raining.

At last, the reading part talk about asteroid strike as a possible theory. Since, this phenomenon causes lots of dust, which can prevent sun from lightening, and cause the death of plants and animals. On the contrary the lecturer, thinks it is true most of the scientists believe in asteroid strike and they found the big crater, but it cannot be a good one for being the cause of extinction because it happened twelve million years before extinction.

All in all, in one side the author demonstrates three theories to find the cause of massive extinction, on the other side, the speaker, refuses all of them and give complete explanation to refute them.
