The zebra mussel habitat changed during past decads and traveled from Estern Europe to North America by human activities. The reading passage suggested mussels spread so quickly and there is negative effect on environment while the lecturer cast doupt on this idea.
Firstly, the reading passage mentioned when ships traveled to North Americal and spread thorough the Europe, mussels attached to the ships and travel everywhere, in contrat, the lecturer mentioned, zebra mussels do not survive in salt water, furthermore, travel ships use ocean water to fill their container with salt water which kill mussels.
Secondly, the reading mentioned the mussels have no preditors in their new habitat and make mussels a dominant species, in contrast, the professor retuts this claim by the fact that when other species such as bird find out mussels are another type of food, they could change their diat and consume mussels.
Finally, the reading part mentioned mussels also consume planktond as a source of food, as a result the plankton population decrases, finally fishes which use plankton also decrease,. From another aspect, the lecturer mention the zebra mussels become a food source for bottom fishes, moreover, mussels have positive effect on other type of fishes.
