The lecturer says that the causes of the declination of yellow cedar remain unclear. He provides explanations that doubt points made in the reading.
First, although the cedar bark beetles attack the yellow cedar, the insect parasites are not the main reason. Since healthy cedar trees have chemicals that poisonous to insects saturated in their leaves, healthy cedar trees are resistant to the beetles. The lecturer explains that the trees that are eaten by insects are damaged or even dead before that insects' attack, so the cedar bark beetle attacks are not the main cause.
Second, the declination of cedar tree population may not be relevant to bears' attacks. Despite that bears do destroy some trees, there is no strong connection between shrinking population of cedar trees and bears' attacks. In both mainland and off-coast islands cedar trees decline, but in off-coast islands there are no bears.
Third, the reading says that the population of cedar trees is negatively influenced by frost damage. However, the lecturer says that frost damage could not explain the declination. He provides a counterexample to the point. If the claims made in the passage is correct, the trees that grows in higher elevations, where frost happens more frequently, should have more apparent declination than those grows in lower elevations. But this is not the fact.
