TPO32

The author of the reading passage and the lecturer both discuss the odd sound, known as quackers, occurring under the water. The author expresses that there are several theories about what might have caused these sounds. However, the lecturer casts doubt on these hypotheses and refutes each of the author's theories by providing several counter-arguments.

First of all, the author mentions that the strange noises might be caused by the orca whales during their courtship ritual, and the sounds they make actually are similar to those that the submarines were detecting. On the contrary, the lecturer disputes that the Orah whales live near the surface of the water and the submarines are in the deep water. So the strange sounds cannot be Orah whales' sounds.

Secondly, the author thinks that the sound might be made by the giant squids. These squids might emit sounds and approach the submarines out of curiosity. However, the lecturer states squids live underwater constantly for a long time, but there is a certain period of time that the sounds disappeared. So if the sounds were produced by the squids, there would have no reason that the sounds disappeared.

Finally, the author indicates that the sounds may be emitted by the foreign submarines unintentionally. By contrast, the lecturer points out that if the sounds were emitted by the other submarines, the submarines must have turned fast to move around. However, the technology now cannot invent such advanced submarines that turn so fast to move around. What is more, the sound should have been accompanied by the noise engine sounds emitted by the submarines. Still, there were no signs of the engine sounds. Therefore, the lecturer believes that the sounds are not produced by the foreign submarines.
