The author of the reading passage and the lecturer both discuss whether Venus is suitable for human to live or not. The author indicates that the conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable, which makes a human presence there impossible. However, the lecturer claims that, indeed, the surface of Venus is so extreme and inhospitable that humans are not able to live there, but humanbeings can build a station floating fifteen kilometers above Venus atmosphere, which then enables human to live in the station. The lecturer then refutes each of author's theories by providing several counter-arguments.
First, the author states that the atmospheric pressure at Venus surface is several times greater than that of at Earth's surface. As a result, if humans land on Venus, the atmospheric pressure might crush human and other things as well. Nevertheless, the lecturer points out that the pressure of the station which floats above fifteen kilometers above Venus atmosphere is actually equivalent with the pressure on Earth. This, then, enables the stations to be unaffected by the heavy pressure on Venus and people can, therefore, live in it.
In addition, the author expresses that the Venus' atmosphere is made up mostly of carbon dioxide, nitrogen and other chemicals except water and oxygen. As a consequence, people might need to supply the water and oxygen to Venus from Earth. Also, the idea of maintaining a regular supply of water and oxygen is impractical in such extreme atmosphere in Venus. Conversely, the lecturer asserts that there are plenty of chemicals that can be used to produce water and oxygen in Venus. Thus, the water and oxygen necessary for humans to survive can, in fact, easily be obtained from Venus.
Finally, the author declares that there little sunlight reaches Venus' surface because most of it is reflected back to space by the thick clouds. Below these clouds is a dense layer of carbon dioxide, which blocks even more light, leading to little light reaching the surface and little electricity to power machines or equipment. Nonetheless, the lecturer reveals that the station floating above the Venus' atmosphere can actually be beneficial from the sunlight reflected from the Venus. This is because the station can absorb the sunlight from Venus. Besides, the station can also absorb sunlight from above, from the sun. Therefore, the electricity is obviously not a problem.
