Summarize the points made in the lecture you just heard, explaining how they cast doubt on points made in the reading.

The lecture is about interrogating the ideas of portraying emperor Claudius as an epitome of innovation, wise and fair in the reading. The lecturer criticizes the recent reading with his points, saying his reign was actually more clearly pictured by the authors of his time. He criticizes the idea that Claudius was innovative by putting points like- he paid the army after assassination of the previous emperor, which was a terrible act. Also, Claudius's portrayal as fair is contradicted by the facts that he loved violent gladiator for pleasure, was a notorious judge who was indifferent to both sides of the issue and used to take biased decision. He also conquered Britain and destroyed it's indigenous people to pacify his ego and prestige. Adding to the criticism, the lecturer also posits that although Claudius involved slaves and former slaves in politics, they were mostly corrupt and susceptible to bribery. This clearly shows that it was not a prudent step taken by Claudius. His wives were mostly murderous. His last wife even tried to poison him with virulent mushroom. Adding to these, choosing Nero as his next heir cogently depicts how unwise his decisions and judgement were. These points made by the lecturer contradicts the idea of portraying Claudius as innovative, fair and wise in the reading.
