Educators should find out what students want included in the curriculum and then offer it to them
While I agree that the educators should find out what students want included in the curriculum, I believe they should consider other factors which students may not perceive before modifying the curriculum.
20th century marked the period of the Industrial Revolution. As we entered into the 21st century, the Intellectual Revolution is taking up shape. As a result, there are numerous disciplines that are coming up for the students to specialize in. Not only this, but there are many fields of specialization that require inter-disciplinary knowledge. Hence, it is necessary that the educators should find out what are the major areas of specialization that students want to pursue and modify the curriculum accordingly.
Consider the field of Computer Science and Engineering. Some of the specialization fields include data mining, pattern recognition, automation, computer architecture, etc. Such is the demand for the specialization in these fields in the industry that the students increasingly want to take the specialization courses at an early stage in their colleges. Due to this requirement of the students, the system of elective subjects has evolved. After studying the basic subjects in their curriculum, the students are free to select their area of specialization and take the elective courses accordingly. Such has been the success of this new system that many universities around the world are adopting it. This is one of the examples that encourage the need for the educators to find out the requirements of the students.
While it is important that the educators should take the students wants into consideration while modifying the curriculum they should not completely yield to it. The educators should take into account other factors like actual field scenario, the number of students to be benefited through the change, the feasibility of the modification of the curriculum under the present educational system, etc.
Hence, it is important that educators should find out what students want included in their curriculum, but should also take into consideration other factors that the students might not be able to perceive from the repose of the college environment.
