The author of the passage holds that it is impossible for human to habitat on Venus because of its extreme conditions, while the lecturer in the lecture expresses an opposite view.
To begin with, the author claims that atmospheric pressure at Venus’ surface is so high that all spacecraft and humans that try to land on it would crush. However, the lecturer rebuts that it is more favorable to establish a floating station like balloon at 50 km above the surface. In this way, the pressure problem can be perfectly solved because atmospheric pressure decreases with height. As a result, the pressure at 50 km above the planet’s surface is equal to that on earth, which causes no danger to our live.
Moreover, the author believes that water and oxygen do not exist on Venus and thereby need to be transferred from Earth. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes that we can produce them. Water and oxygen can be made from the planet’s atmosphere compounds – carbon dioxide, nitrogen and sulfuric acid, through chemical process. Besides, the fact that those chemicals can be easily accessed from atmosphere makes it unnecessary to worry about generating enough water and oxygen for the station mentioned above and human residents.
Finally, the author puts forward that there is very little sunlight reaches the Venus’ surface, ruling out the possibility that generating electricity through solar power. Instead, the lecturer retorts that the floating space station can also handle this task because it locates above the thick clouds that block 60% of sunlight. Also, by collecting both direct and reflected light at the same time, it facilitates not only the quantity but also the efficiency of electricity generation.
