The graph and table below give information about water use worldwide and water consumption in two different countries.
The graph depicts the amount of water that was used for agriculture, industrial and homes around the world from 1900 to 2000 while the table compares the amount of water used in Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo(D.R.C) in 2000.
It is clear that, in general, global water needs rose significantly between 1900 and 2000, and the enormous amount of water was used for agricultural purpose. Besides, water consumption was considerably higher in Brazil than in the D.R.C.
To specify, in 1900, around 500 km3 of water was used by the agriculture sector worldwide, and the amount of water used for this purpose increased continuously during the ninetieth century and reached a peak by 3000 km3 at the end of the period. The figures for industrial and domestic water consumption were both negligible at the beginning of the period, with approximately 100 km3 and 50 km3 respectively, and they remained minimal until mid-century. However, from 1950 onwards, the industrial use overgrew to just over 1000 km3, while the domestic use went up more slowly to only 300 km3, both far below the levels of consumption by agriculture.
As the information in the table is concerned, it can be seen that a vast amount of water was used in agriculture in Brazil, and this is reflected in the figures consumption per person: 359 m3 compared with 8 m3 in the Congo. This could be explained by the fact that Brazil has 265 times more irrigated land than the Congo. Furthermore, with a population of 176 million, the patterns for Brazil indicate how agriculture water consumption can be used in some countries.
