How to overcome a fear.
All humans have their own fears: fear of spiders, fear of driving, fear of height, fear of communicating with strangers and so on. Fear can still exist even while people have a desire to avoid them as fear is a biological response which is designed to basically keep the human species surviving. Thus, people have no choice but accepting and trying to control the fears. It cannot be denied that overcoming a fear is arduous; however, people can basically relieve a fear by following four simple steps.
The first step is analyzing our fear to precisely understand it. It’s quite essential to discover and see through a fear instead of ignoring it. Take a paper and define literally what makes us scared. Then, continuously write down how it makes we feel, especially whether we have the physical symptoms of fear including sweaty forehead, cool and shaky hands, dry mouth, or even nausea. After that, wonder whether we have missed any opportunity or goal due to our fears.
The second step is uncomplicated to do. It requires us to respond to two questions: ‘What is the worst situation that could happen when we’re trying to confront our fears?’ and ‘How many percent that the worst situation could happen?’ For instance, if my fear were driving, the most terrifying situation happening while I drove could be destroying my neighbor’s barrier, or killing a dog crossing the street, or even crashing into a passenger. According to a study in the UK, there’s only 0.00009% that person could die in a crash. It means the possibility of my dying in a car is the same as that of a person’s being stuck in lightning or winning an Oscar (Walid). Actually, if I drive my car carefully, within the safety-speed, in the right lanes, there will be nothing to have butterflies.
Next, force ourselves to relax while we’re encountering a fear. We can do some simple actions to comfort ourselves and relieve the anxiety. For example, when I’m supposed to present in front of many people, there’s a likelihood that my heart beats faster, and knees become weak and my hands shake in an unstoppable way. In that situation, what I can do to control my fear is taking long and deep breaths. By long-deep breathing, the blood pressure will rate down, and it activates the parasympathetic nervous system, then helps relax ourselves (Dennis 27). The other tips we can try is walking around outside of the room or walking up and down several stairs before facing our fear; it can help take load off our minds (Lester 10).
After relaxing our body, it’s time to accustom ourselves to our fears. Humans are supposed to acknowledge that fear is a crucial part of ours so we need to acclimatize to it. One of the easiest ways to get used to fears is practicing. Usually, the more often we do something, the less horrifying it gets. To exemplify, if one’s fear is snakes, he or she can first have a look at artistic photos and videos of snakes, then distinguish the poisonous snakes and the non-poisonous ones and visit the zoo to meet the real ones. By react with snakes, he or she may be able to overcome the fear of them or at least decrease the amount of the fear.
In conclusion, fear is human’s nature. People need to accept and put efforts in overcoming it. Overcoming a fear is actually a challenging process; however, we can basically overcome fears by only four following elementary steps: analyzing our fears, thinking of the worst situation could happen, comforting ourselves and accustoming our fears. Overcoming our fears means we can take many advantages and opportunities to achieve their goals which can result in a gorgeous future life. Thus, let’s try our best to practice all the steps above.
