zoos
The article states that zoos are essential to society and provide reasons for support. However, the professor explains that there are problems with the author's arguments and he doesn't believe that zoos benefit the animals or the society and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading states that animals are treated well in zoos. The professor refutes this point by stating that the animal treatment at zoos is not pretty. In an incident in a zoo, two red pandas were found dead after being exposed to rat poison. The safety managers could have prevented this, but they were nowhere to be found. This shows lack of care by handlers in the zoo.
Second, the reading claims that the purpose of zoos is educational for visitors. The professor opposes this by saying that people still look at it as entertainment. Majority of animals in zoos are chosen for attracting visitors, not to educate them. These visitors learns a message that in zoos it's okay to use animals. The professor further states that, some zoos do inform important details about animals. However, these exhibits are presented in artificial or misleading way, which belies the purpose of educating the visitors about the animals.
Third, the article avers that zoos contribute in protecting endangered species. The professor contends that this is problematic. He agrees that success in case of Golden Lion Taamar is good. However, zoos have poor success rate in terms of protecting endangered species. Zoos have small number of animals and they interbreed within family, which results as rise in birth defects. Furthermore, he states that zoos present have no advantage to saving endangered species when compared to saving them in their natural habitats.
