TPO 48 In recent years, many frog species around the world have declined in numbers or even gone extinct due to changes in their environment. These population declines and extinctions have serious consequences for the ecosystems in which frogs live; for example, frogs help play a role in protecting humans by eating disease-carrying insects. Several methods have been proposed to solve the problem of declining frog populations.
The reading and lecture are both about the declining of frog population over the past years. The author of the reading believes that there are three possible solutions to the problem. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the passage, saying that the methods offer impractical solution in the decline in frog population.
First of all, the author points out that majority are frogs are affected by usage of pesticide in the farms. The article notes that implementation of stricter rules with the widespread use of chemicals in land will drastically improve the population of frogs. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that lowering the consumption of pesticides are not economical to local farmers due to they rely on pesticides for abundant crop harvest. Moreover, she argues that the farm land which is affected by the drop in population in frog will not to use chemicals because of strict policies implemented, so their yield will be fewer compared to other farms.
Secondly, the author contends that fungus are spreading to the immune system of the frogs causing them die from dehydration. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that anti-fungal application to frogs are not practical, each species needs to be applied with the medicine and its time consuming. Furthermore, she elaborates on this by mentioning that it is extremely difficult to capture frogs and anti-fungal needs to be reapplied every time. In addition, their off springs also needs to be treated with the fungus bacteria.
Finally, the author states that the decline in their population is because of their ecosystem are threatened. The article denotes that human play the crucial role on destroying their habitat by excessive use of their water and draining of wetlands. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that water use by people are not the biggest threat in their habitat. She puts forth the idea that global warming is the major cause in the destruction of their environment.
