Extinction
The listening lecture totally opposes to the reading passage in causes of the extinction happened in the Triassic period. First of all the reading says that when the sea level decline, the shallow or coastal habitats will be destroy. However, the reading argues that it is true that the sea level had decline, but it decline in a gradual way. Shallow or coastal habitats are capable to adapt to gradual environment changes. As a result, since the sea level do not decline suddenly, this explanation is not likely to be true.
In addition, the reading indicates that Triassic period extinction was cause by massive climate cooling. On the other hand, the listening suggests that this hypothesis is incorrect. It is true that the temperature had reduce, but it only happen in a short period of time and the extinction requires a long period of climate cooling. Besides, those SO2 cause by volcanic activities were clean out by combine with water and return back to the atmosphere. Therefore, since the SO2 left, it is impossible to cause the long lasting temperature cooling.
last but not least, the reading implies that the extinction were cause by asteroid strike. However, the listening asserts that this explanation were also inaccurate. Researchers had not found any pieces of asteroid that can date back to the time of Triassic period extinction. Researchers had found some asteroid that can be dated way earlier the Triassic period extinction occur, so it can not be the evidence. To say it differently, since researchers had not found any evidence of asteroid pieces, the hypothesis of asteroid striking is not likely to be true.
