The diagrams below show how houses can be protected in areas which are prone to flooding.
The diagrams illustrate the method of protecting houses in areas which are likely to subject to flooding.
Overall, it is clear that there are two types of areas, with and without a stopbank, and at-risk houses are constructed on stilts above the ground.
In the area with a stopbank, the stopbank, a small mound of land built near the river, is considered a flood defense which is higher than the 100-year flood level to prevent the river from busting its bank. Moreover, houses are built on short stilts to prevent water from raining pouring down from the higher another side area. There is also a floodgate attached under the stopbank to let the water from the internal ponding out when it is full.
Houses in without stopbank areas are raised on higher stilts. The stilt height is measured technically to make sure that it is 300 mm higher than the 100-year flood or ponding level. This type of measurement is called freeboard.
