Ash trees
The listening lecture totally opposes to the reading passage in whether people can save the ash tree from the catastrophic damage caused by the emerald ash borers. To begin with, the reading says that banning commercial transportation will prevent these trees from spreading. However, the listening indicates that this idea is not comprehensive. Banning cannot prevent individual spreading, because people often cannot distinguish whether this tree is infested or not. For instance, when people go out camping, they might take the infested trees home and use it as fire wood. In other words, people often spread the infested trees without noticing because they can not distinguish between trees.
In addition, the reading implies that people can drill holes in the ash trees and inject a chemical that either kill the emerald ash borers or force them to leave the trees. Likewise, the listening argues that this solution is not likely to work. The chemical only have the effect for 2 years, so people will need to inject it every 2 years. Therefore, there will be many holes on the trees, which is not good for them because they will become more vulnerable and be destroyed be other insects.
Last but not least, the reading suggests that people can plant trap trees that emerald ash borers like to lay their eggs on so foresters can discover it and eventually kill the emerald ash borers. Nevertheless, the listening asserts that this idea will work only if foresters cut down all of the trees before the young emerald ash borers mature. However, people often forget or do not have time to cut down all of the trees. As a result, this will cause the number of emerald ash borers increase and become even more harmful to the ash trees.
