The table below describes the number of employees and factories in England and Wales from 1851 to 1901.
The table illustrates how many workers of both genders and industrial settings in two areas, namely England and Wales over the period from 1851 to 1901.
As be seen from the table, there was a downward tendency in the number of employees while the trend for factories was opposite.
In 1851, the number of males employees was much higher than the female counterparts, with 287,100 and 190,000 respectively. However, there was a sharp decrease by double in the number of male workers within 10 years whereas the figure for females slightly dropped to 160,000 and women became dominant in 1861. Subsequently, the number of female employees fell at a higher speed to 60,000 in 1871, as opposed to the more significant figure for men, with 80,123. Following that, the figures for workers of two genders kept decreasing till the end of the period to 31,000 for males and 30,000 for females.
On the other hand, the number of industrial establishments stood at 225 in 1851 and stayed statistic in the next 10 years before rising dramatically by roughly 400 in 1971. The period from 1971 to 1981 experienced a considerable increase in the number of factories, which hit the highest point of 721, followed by a drop to 600 at the end of the period.
