Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to you regarding the article titled ‘Living Marvels’ published on 17th April, in your magazine Around the World.
The write-up was about the gigantic Bruhadisvara temple in South India and it was a great read throwing light on the minute details of the marvelous and mesmerizing sculptures. Most importantly, the skill-sets of the sculptors and the brilliance of the construction techniques have been analyzed which we rarely get to know about.
However, there are some flaws which need to be rectified. Firstly, there is a typo in the height of the shrine’s main pagoda: it should be 30ft instead of 50ft. Furthermore, your editor has mentioned that the temple was built in 13th century, while it was indeed completed in 12th century by the Cholas dynasty. I know this as I have read about the temple in a book by the renowned Indian epigraphist Dr. Raman. I could share a copy of this book for your reference in case you require.
This temple is of immense importance to Indians and is a popular tourist attraction as well. I hope you will republish this correction in the weekly at the earliest possible. If I could suggest some piece of interesting information for the reprint, there is a monolithic pillar in the south-east corner of the building which is suspended from the roof without any support from the base - this is less known to people as it is in a low-lit area.
I am looking forward to reading the updated version of the article.
Yours faithfully,
Ritu Sharma
