The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011
The graph demonstrates the ratio of house owning to renting of British and Welsh people from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, there is a significant difference in the trend of accommodation between before and after 1971. Whereas from 1918 to 1971, the proportion of accommodation owner was higher than the renter, the next 4 decades underwent a complete reversal.
In 1918, there was only about 22% of British and Welsh people owned houses while that number of people rented house was nearly 4 times. In the following years, the percentage of households in rented accommodation decreased gradually but it still higher than owned accommodation. However, in 1971, both proportions were similar and equal to 50%.
Over a 1971-2001 period, people tended to live in their own houses in England and Wale according to a steady rise in the house ownership percentage from 50% to the peak at approximately 69%. By contrast, the number of people who live in rented houses continued to drop and hit its lowest point at more than 30%. After the next 10 years, it went through a modest increase in percentage reaching about 35% in 2011 while the percentage of owning accommodation declined slightly by about 5%.
