The passage discusses that there was a mass extinction event in about million years ago that destroyed more than half of living species. In this terrible event only dinosaurs could be alive and to become the dominant species for the next 145 million years. The article provides three reasons to support this theory. In contrast, the professor thinks these reasons do not seem convincing and rejects all of them.
Firs, the reading claims that the cause of extinction was related to the decrease of the sea levels. So, the decrease in the sea levels destroyed the habitats for marine animals. As a result, it had bad effects on food chains. Therefore, many of living animals extincted. However, the professor rebuts this idea by stating that it is not a good reason for extinction. Additionaly, she explains that this change acoured gradually and for killing these amount of animals it needed to be a quick phenomenon.
Second, the article argues that there is a possibility that large amount of sulfur oxid thet released to the atmosphere during the volcanic activity was responsible for the mass extinction. By having a lot of amount of this gas in the atmosphere the remperature will decrease and it can lead to extinction of animals, but the professor refutes this too. The professor describes that this event can decrease the temperature only for a short time. Also, sulfuric acid can combine with the water in the atmosphere and back as rain into the ground. The professor strongly rejects this reason.
Third, the text asserts that asteroid strike was the cause of mass extinction. While the professor explains that there are few of scientists that believe this theory. Furthermore, the professor describes that the crators they have finds are belong to many many years before the mass extinction period. So, these strikes are not the answer to mass extinction.
