Hail pellets can fall with great force and destroy crops in the field. Over the last few decades, a method of reducing hail, called "cloud seeding," has been tried. In cloud seeding, the chemical silver iodide is sprayed on storm clouds from an airplane This makes the clouds produce harmless rain or snow instead of hail. Several pieces of evidence suggest that cloud seeding has been effective in protecting crops from hail.

The lecture and the passage discuss whether cloud seeding is an effective way to reduce crop damage or not. The reading states that cloud seeding is an efficient manner for protecting farms. Whereas, the professor in the lecture declares that it couldn't have a positive effect on reducing crop damage.
First, the passage mentions that some experiments in the laboratory illustrate that when silver iodide adds to cold water vapor, the result is light snow and not hail pallets. However, the lecturer argues against that by saying that unlike in the laboratory, in real life cloud seeding prevents of formation of any precipitation in clouds. It causes a drought in many areas that have a low level of precipitation. Consequently, crop damage due to hills pail will replace by crop damage due to lack of water. Therefore, cloud seeding might have a negative impact.
Second, the reading passage claims that the positive effects of using cloud seeding in Asian countries can extend to the United States. Although, the professor disagrees with this argument and says that there is no guarantee for the repetition of that phenomenon in the United States. Also, he expresses that cloud seeding in Asian countries is tried in some urban areas with a high level of air pollution. Moreover, polluted particles in the air by interaction with those seeds make a favorable condition to control precipitation. Hence, it may not occur in the unpolluted area like the countryside in the United States.
Finally, the reading suggests that monitoring crop damage in some farming regions in the United States reveals the effectiveness of cloud seeding. While, the lecturer argues against that by saying that if the reduction of crop damage was related to cloud seeding, the same results would not have demonstrated in other regions. Therefore, regarding the reduction of crop damage in most of the regions, we can't consider cloud seeding as a key role. It might be the result of a natural variation that nothing to do with cloud seeding.
Although the passage brings three reasons to say that cloud seeding is an effective way to reduce crop damage due to hail-pieces, but the professor makes a reasonable argument against that to demonstrate that it couldn't be an efficient manner.
