Both the reading and listening parts offer two opposite views about the accuracy of Peary's claim about his trip to the North Pole. While the passage lists three arguments to rear this trip, the lecturer, on the other hand, make them shaky and refutes all clues discussed in the passage.
First of all, the article claims that the National Geographic Society asked a committee to survey the validity of this journey, and this group verified this trip. However, the professor rejects the accuracy of the conducted research, since the committee was Peary's close friends who funded this trip. Furthermore, the research continued for two days and they did not examine the trip's documents completely. Therefore, this committee's idea is biased.
Secondly, the text refers to Avery's same trip, which took in less than 37 days, as an example that Peary's trip which longed 37 days is possible. Conversely, the instructor refutes the logic of this reference too. As she explains, the trip conditions of Avery differ from Peary’s, Avery's dogsleds were not as heavy as Peary's, as he did not have to carry his food. Also, the weather condition in Avery's trip was favorable; while, during the Peary's trip take in the harsh and unfavorable weather condition. Consequently, the short duration of Avery's trip cannot verify Peary also went the same path with the same speed.
Finally, meanwhile, the passage posits that by calculation of solar shadow in the photo taken by Peary during his trip can approve his claim about the trip, the lecturer rejects this clue too. As she said, this photo cannot illustrate the exact position of the sun, because it is taken 100 years ago by the primitive camera, which is not precise and is fuzzy. Besides, based on the overprinting the photo gets fated and the shadow is blurred. As a result, the fuzzy shadow in the photo cannot provide accurate data about the sun position and location.
