TPO-17
In the past century, the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States—birds in particular. Unfortunately for birds, these trends are likely to continue, with the result that the number of birds in the United States will necessarily decline.
The reading and the lecture are both about the decreasing number of birds in the United States. The text claims that this is an effect of the fast growth rate of people in the world, as well as agriculture and pesticides used. The lecturer opposes the statements in the reading. The professor is of the opinion that those are not convincing arguments to explain this phenomenon.
First, the text argues that the natural habitats used by birds are now the new homes for people. As populations grow, the cities are being expanded, so that new habitants can have their places to live. This includes all the services associated, such as the construction of malls and offices. On the other hand, the lecturer challenges this by explaining that these places have actually attracted a variety of birds to live there. For instance, pigeons and falcons thrive in urban environments. Moreover, they can provide better and larger habitats for some species of birds.
Secondly, the article mentions that it is due to the lands being used by agriculture that birds cannot longer stay in their natural environments. The lecturer refutes this specific argument by explaining that it is incorrect the way the article assumes this fact. Nowadays, the agriculture industry is based on more productive varieties of crops, which yield more food with the same amount of terrain. It is for this reason that there will not be increases in use of land.
Finally, the reading states that because of increasing agriculture, the use of pesticides have risen as well. Consequently, this produces a contamination of the water and insects eaten by birds. However, the lecturer disagrees with this argument. According to the listening, use of toxic pesticides was harmful practice from the past, that will not persist in the future due to increased awareness. Furthermore, science has developed new crops, by genetic modifications that can resist insect predation.
