Both the reading and listening parts offer two opposite views about the possibility of humpback's navigation by the stars. While the passage lists three feasible reasons for the possibility of this usage; the professor, on the other hand, casts doubt on the accuracy of those clues, and presents some facts the call those clues into the question.
First of all, the article refers to the intelligence of humpback as the capability of this animal for using the night shy for orientation; in contrast, the lecturer refutes this evidence. According to his assertation, the navigation by the sky night is also used by other animals with average cognition, such as the duck. This example shows that usage of sky night for migration is based on the instinct ability by which animal had borne. Consequently, there is no link and connection between the high-level of intelligence of humpback and orientation by the stars.
Another reason which the instructor challenges its validity is the reason explained in the text as the humpbacks move in a straight line; furthermore, since there is no consistent landmark in the seafloor, stars are the landmarks for humpbacks. On the contrary, the lecturer mentioned that humpbacks instead of using the objects, they used external forces such as the earth's magnetic field for this straight movement. As he explains, the humpback possesses a specific part in their brain called bio-magnetic which is sensitive to the magnetic field. Therefore, this sensitive part actuates its brain and guides it in a straight direction. So, the stars could not be accountable for this action.
Finally, meanwhile, the passage mentioned to the spy-hopping as an unusual behavior of humpback used for observation of stars; otherwise, the professor rejects this reason too. According to his explanation, the shark also does the identical action; while it does not either migrate nor looks for the star. The shark main purpose of this action is seeking food. In addition, the humpback does spy-hopping during the morning hours, when there is no star in the sky. Thus, the spy-hopping is not for the stars' observation.
