The graph below shows the consumption of 3 spreads from 1981 to 2007.
The line chart illustrates the amount of three various spreads which were consumed over a period of 26 years starting from 1981.
Overall, it is clear that while the consumption of margarine and butter decreased, the opposite was true for low fat & reduced spreads. it is also notable that a substantial fall was seen in the figure for butter
As can be seen from the chart, at the start of the period, butter was the most popular spread with about 140 grams in comparison with 90 grams for margarine. Since then, the figure for butter rose to reach a peak of 160 grams in 1986 but later plunged to under 70 grams in 1996. By contrast, the amount of margarine consumed remained stable after a decrease of about 10 grams
Looking at the graph in more detail, from 1996 to 2007, the consumption of butter and margarine both declined and made up roughly 50 grams and exactly 40 grams in respectively. In this time span, low fat & reduced spreads just accounted for 10 grams but later soared to around 70 grams in the last year.
